How to achieve the above result?
Two ways: You can either use the original official Ambiance and Radiance themes (and icons) which I've extracted from a Intellibook running Ubuntu (12.04? I guess). Or you can use the modified theme by "Namakutux" which looks slightly better in my opinion. If someone has a laptop with 9.04 or 9.10 installed (Ubuntu which is still using GNOME 2) I'd appreciate it if you could extract the Ambiance and Radiance themes (and icons) from it, since those two are made for GNOME 2 and should work great on MATE which is a GNOME 2 fork. The laptop I've extracted mine from is running a newer version which features Unity and GNOME 3.
In both cases, it is recommended to use my panel background which I'll link later in this description. To set it, right click on the panel and select "Properties", on the "Background" tab select the downloaded file. How I got that file? I found a screenshot of an old Ubuntu version and cut it out.
A nice addition is/are the official Ubuntu wallpaper(s). I've found some wallpapers from Ubuntu 10.10 to 12.10 somewhere on my laptop and uploaded them, no idea whether the package contains all wallpapers.
Although I dislike what Ubuntu has become today (a commercial Linux distribution who's main goal is profit), I do love the good old look of older Ubuntu versions. It is a mixture of nostalgic memories of good old times and the well made design of Ubuntu.

Modified theme (no icons): namakutux.blogspot.de/2012/10/…
